Yvonne Slaven Sheffield died Sunday morning at St. Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri. She is survived by her son David Slaven of Kansas City; granddaughter, Sarah Lemmond and husband Jake; sister in law, Verna Slaven; a brother and sister in law J.G. and Marva Slaven of Rector, a sister Ruby “Tuby” Trail of Bono, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Morris Sheffield; parents B.G. “Gar” and Maggie Prysock Slaven; and a brother, Burl “Bus” Slaven.
A graduate of Bono High School and started her working career at the Box Factory in Jonesboro. She then worked at the Woolworth store on main for a number of years before settling into her career in the grocery business. She worked at Liberty Cash Grocery and then moved to Lynn Green’s Lucky supermarket where she retired after many years of service.
She moved to Kansas City 9 years ago and was a resident of the Jeanne Jugen center in Kansas City. She became active in the Red Hat Society and made several close friends that had a standing card and domino game every week. She would not play bingo because she considered it gambling. She became close with Sister Monique and the Sister would check on her every night at bed time to make sure she was comfortable.
Funeral services will be 11:00 Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at the Herman Baptist Church with Elvis Brandon officiating and Emerson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Burial will follow at Herman Cemetery with Thomas Northern, Ronnie Slaven, Roger Blankenship, Steve Whitmire, Mark Whitmire and Andy Slaven serving as pallbearers. Visitation will be from 10:00 until service time. A time of fellowship well be immediately following the burial.
