William Robert Vanscoy Sr

March 11, 1945 — January 5, 2021

William Robert VanScoy, Sr., departed this life January 5, 2021 after a long illness. Known as Bill to his family and friends, he was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Lucille VanScoy and E.W. VanScoy, his sister, Reba Chism, and his grandson Samuel VanScoy. Bill was born in Prescott, Arkansas in 1945.

Devoted to Mary, his wife of 56 years, Bill was a proud and loving parent to their son, Dr. William Robert VanScoy, Jr. One of his favorite roles in life was that of “Papa” to his beloved grandsons. He taught them to hunt and fish and they cherished the time they spent with him. We take comfort in knowing that his youngest grandson, Sam, is now once again playing practical jokes on his Papa.

Bill was a man of faith, family, and service to his country. He and Mary were active members of Prescott Church of Christ for more than 50 years. He retired after 39 years with the National Guard and Reserves. An avid outdoorsman, he later worked with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.

Bill is survived by his wife, Mary VanScoy, son and daughter-in-law, Drs. Sara and Robert VanScoy, grandchildren Will VanScoy, Jackie and Joseph VanScoy, and a number of nieces, great nieces, and nephews.

A service in celebration of Bill’s life will be held at a later date due to the pandemic.

To honor Bill’s memory, donations to the Sam VanScoy Dixie Band Camp Scholarship are appreciated. Memorial gifts can be made through the Jonesboro Public Schools Foundation.
