William G. Holmes

October 24, 1922 — December 29, 2013

William Gus (Bill) Holmes, 91, of Jonesboro, died Sunday, December 29, 2013, at the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House.

Born in Hornsby, Tennessee, Bill lived much of his life in Memphis before moving to Jonesboro in 2004. He was a retired heavy equipment operator for the City of Memphis with 25 years of service and was a U.S. Army veteran of W.W. II. Bill was a member of the Baptist church, Order of the Eastern Star and a 32nd degree Mason.

Bill enjoyed playing the guitar, fishing, hunting, garage sales and was an amateur taxidermist. He was preceded in death by his parents, Augustus and Viola Holmes, and by 4 sisters and 3 brothers.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Nettie Maxwell Holmes of the home, brother-in-law, Marva Shoe, 3 sisters-in-law: Betty Shoe, Nell Mattix and Hazel Maxwell, and a host of nephews and nieces.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 in Emerson Memorial Chapel with Byron Griffey officiating. Burial will follow in Bishop Cemetery.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. in Emerson Chapel.
