Wayman J. Perkins, 86, of Jonesboro, died Thursday evening at Culpepper Place in Jonesboro.
A native and life-long resident of Jonesboro, Wayman was a retired letter carrier for the US Postal Service with 20 years of service. Following retirement from the Post Office, Wayman estabablished Perkins Mobile Home and RV Park on Parker Road. Wayman was a graduate of Arkansas State University and taught math at Nettleton High School for a year before working for the Post Office.
Wayman was a U.S. Army veteran of W.W. II and was injured during combat in the Hurtgen Forest of Germany on November 17, 1944. He was hospitalized for eight months and was discharged in July 1945.
Wayman was a faithful member of Nettleton Church of Christ and was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans where he volunteered as a service officer. He was a member of the National Letter Carriers Association and was a long-time caretaker of Pine Hill Cemetery where he served on the Cemetery Board. Wayman was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Bernie Watkins Perkins, and by a brother, Wayne Perkins.
Survivors include his wife, Eula Mae Chambers Perkins of the home; one son and daughter-in-law: Dennnis and Debbie Perkins of Jonesboro; 2 granddaughters, Ashlee Caldwell and her husband, Rob Caldwell, and Jill Young, all of Jonesboro; and 4 great grandchildren: Keely Caldwell, Lexee Caldwell, Talen Caldwell and Cache Young.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 3:00 in Emerson Memorial Chapel with Jimmy Young and Charles Cooper officiating. Private burial in Pine Hill Cemetery will follow.
Honorary pallbearers include Earl Watkins, Vopal Watkins, Phil Bridger, Jim Perkins, Paul Calkin, Cecil Stevens, John Brewer, Ernest Coleman, Wayman’s McDonald’s coffee buddies and the members of his Sunday school class at Nettleton Church of Christ.
Visitation will be held Sunday afternoon from 2:00-3:00, prior to the service at Emerson.
