Wanda Vernell Sawyer passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home on May 21, 2026. She was born on November 6, 1941, in Burdette, Arkansas, to Delbert and Veron Shaw.

Wanda was a graduate of Arkansas State College, where she earned her bachelor’s degree. Following graduation, she began her career in education as a school teacher in Armorel. After several years of teaching, she made a career change and devoted many years to serving others as a social worker for the State of Arkansas. Wanda enjoyed sewing, playing games on her computer, and spending time with those she loved most.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Robert “Leroy” Sawyer. Wanda had outlived the majority of her family and friends.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Delbert Sawyer; her daughter, Edith Sawyer; her special best friend, Loretta Gilman; and her beloved pets, her cat, Bob, and her blue heeler, Charlie.

Visitation will be held Monday, June 1, 2026, at Emerson Funeral Home from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Funeral services will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Bro. Harold McMickle officiating. Burial will be private.
