Virginia Cook, 86, of Jonesboro died Friday, January 25, 2008, at St. Bernards Medical Center. She was born in Jonesboro and lived most of her life here, except when traveling with her husband during his military service. She got married on Sunday, October 4, 1943 at 8:15 AM, prior to the church service in El Paso, Texas.
She was a charter member of Central Baptist Church where she had been a featured soloist with the choir and the choir director, a Sunday School teacher, a member of the WMU and a Caleb Mountain Climber. She was active in the Home Demonstration Club and was the manager of the Sears Catalog Office in Jonesboro from 1941 until 1948. Her hobbies included reading, writing poetry, painting and playing the organ. At the age of 80, she got her first computer and became quite skilled in corresponding with her family. For special events with her family, she would write a poem for the occasion.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, and her son, Frederick “Ricky” Alan Cook.
She is survived by her husband, Mavrick Lee Cook, of the home; two daughters, Doris Lee Burris and her husband Doug of Austin, Texas; and Sara Kathryn Pagan and her husband, Steve of Jonesboro; one sister, Mary Eunice Oldham of Jonesboro; four grandsons, Tim Burris and his wife, Susan; and Kevin Burris and his wife Cheryl, both of Austin Texas; Christopher Pagan and his wife Ashley, and Brian Pagan, both of Jonesboro; three great grandchildren, Cole Burris, Jeffrey Burris, both of Austin; and Cali Pagan of Jonesboro; nephews, Mike Vinson of Houston, Texas and James Oldham of Ventura California.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Sunday, January 27, 2008 at Central Baptist Church with Bro. Mike Martin officiating and burial to follow at Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery with Emerson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews. Honorary pallbearers are Jack Harris, Norman Harris, R. B. McClung, Don Vineyard, Jerry Cooper, Gene McMorries and the members of the Adult 6 Sunday School Department. Visitation will be from 4 – 6 Saturday evening at Emerson Funeral Home.
