Verna Lea “Sissie” Slaven, 87, of Bono passed away peacefully Sunday, January 9, 2022 at NEA Baptist Hospital. She was born February 17, 1934 in Bono to the late Vernie and Elsie (Craig) Cook. Verna was the oldest daughter of 9 children.
Verna married Burl “Bus” Slaven June 26, 1953. They lived most of their life in Bono and Jonesboro. With the exception of 4 years when they lived in Valdosta, Georgia while Bus served in the United States Air Force.
Verna was a member of Washington Ave. Church of Christ. She had a true servant’s heart. Her joy was cooking and taking care of her family. Her Kids, grandkids and great grandkids were the light of her life. She had a heart full of love and compassion for everyone she knew and was never without a smile.
Verna was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Bus; daughter, Rebecca Malone; granddaughter, Michelle Bryant and 6 siblings.
She is survived by her son, Mike Slaven; daughter, Lisa Slaven; grandchildren, Shelia (Chris) DeArmond, Erica (Hank) Wentworth, Michael Swindle, Julian (Amanda) Malone, Courtney Swindle; 7 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
Funeral service will be Friday, January 14, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. in Emerson Memorial Chapel with Bro. Kenneth Gossett officiating. Burial will follow at Herman Cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Emerson Funeral Home.
