Verlyn “Bud” Holmes, 88, passed from this life February 4, 2021 at the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House. Bud was born in Nettleton on February 9, 1932, to the late George and Velma Holmes. In addition to his parents, Bud is preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Betty Holmes; brother, Commander John Holmes; and sister, Lois Wood.
Bud lived all of his life in Jonesboro. He was an Army veteran, serving during the Korean war. After his military service, Bud spent 19 years working at the cotton gin and 19 years working for Craighead Electric. He was an avid sports fan and loved the Razorbacks, St Louis Cardinals, and the ASU Indians. An outdoorsman, he loved hunting and fishing. Most importantly, Bud loved spending time with his family.
Bud is survived by his sons, Verlyn Holmes (Mary), Doug Holmes (Fronda), and Sherry Darby (Sam) all of Jonesboro; grandchildren, Larry Veal (Amanda), Gary Veal (Samantha), Bryce Holmes (Dawn), Eric Morrison, all of Jonesboro, and Cooper Holmes of Sherwood; as well as a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Bud’s neighbor, Peggy Williams, for reading the newspaper to a blind man for five years; and Ronnie Vaughn for helping to take care of his uncle Bud.
A funeral service will be held 3 pm Monday, February 8, 2021 at Emerson Funeral Home. A visitation will precede the service from 2 to 3 pm. Burial will follow at Nettleton cemetery. Honorary pallbearers include Lindel Pratt, Fred Sitz, Neal Moore, Dennis Payton, and the employees of Craighead Electric.
