VELMA PEARL BRICKELL COVINGTON

Velma Pearl Brickell Covington, age 88, of Jonesboro passed away Thursday, February 22, 2007 in Pensacola, FL. Mrs. Covington, daughter of T.E. Brickell and Lily Pearl Halsey Brickell, was born in Batesville, AR on September 30, 1918. When she was one year old, her family moved to the Monette, AR area where she spent her early childhood and school years. In 1938, “Pearl” married Jonesboro native James Albert Covington who was her beloved husband for 52 years. He preceded her in death in 1990. She remained a Jonesboro resident until November of last year, when she moved to be with her daughter in Pensacola, FL. Mrs. Covington had a successful career in ladies ready to wear and was well known to the patrons of the former Fan's Ladies Shop in Jonesboro. She was an active member of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her daughters: Linda Covington Meyer (Carl) of Pensacola, FL and Phyllis Covington Williams (Bob) of Colorado Springs, CO., her sisters, Thelma Reeves of Porterville, CA and Juanita Cooper of Laporte IN, Four grandsons: Larry Meyer of Pensacola, FL, Wesley Meyer (Merita) of Prattville, AL, Jeffrey Cole (Joan) of Denver, CO, and Michael Cole (Wendy) of Washington D.C. Ten great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and many dear friends.

Visitation for “Pearl” will be Tuesday, February 27 from 5 -7 p.m. at Emerson Funeral Home in Jonesboro. Funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 28 at Emerson Memorial Chapel, with Rev. Edward Pruitt and Rev. Dick Haltom officiating. Burial will be at Keller's Chapel Cemetery.

Active pallbearers are: Larry Meyer, Wesley Meyer, Jeffrey Cole, Michael Cole, Christopher Meyer and Joe Pierce. Honorary pallbearers are Bill Lamb, Herbert Halford, Beverly Pierce, Verna Brown, Charlotte Sheridan, Eunice Brickell Brown, her friends at St. Bernards Village and the congregation of Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church or the Keller's Chapel Cemetery Association.
