Thurman George
Walton Jr.
Feb 10, 1944 — Jun 20, 2026
Thurman George Walton Jr. went to be with his Heavenly Father on June 20, 2026. He was born in Philadelphia, Mississippi. His mother was Betty Lee Griffin Walton, and his father was Thurman George Walton Sr. He had two sisters, Mary Ella and Betty Jane.
When George was in elementary school, the family moved to Union, Mississippi. George learned a strict work ethic from his beloved mother. At the age of twelve, he was working at the local movie theater. When he was a teen, he started delivering newspapers. Later, in high school, he started his own mowing business.
George received Christ when he was sixteen at the First Baptist Church in Union. He was active in many of the church activities.
George attended East Central Junior College in Decatur, Mississippi, and received his associate degree. From there, he went on to the University of Southern Mississippi, majoring in accounting. While in Hattiesburg, George met Linda Lott, the love of his life. They were married on December 20, 1970, and were married for fifty-six years. George went to work for General Motors Acceptance Corporation, and this began his lifelong career. He made many friends along the way.
George and Linda adopted two daughters, Jenny and Melanie. He loved them both dearly and spent many years guiding them. He always thought of others above himself, especially Linda.
George was a lifelong hunter. He made several trips to Colorado with his good friends Jim Gillis and Wayne Loggains. They never tired of telling tales about their trips and their escapades. Later, he hunted in Tennessee at a hunting club with his good friend Tim Brantley.
He loved keeping an immaculate yard, mowing the grass just so, and planting and growing beautiful flowers. This year, he enjoyed teaching his grandson Daniel how to mow. They enjoyed a special relationship. Each Tuesday, Daniel came over, and they threw a football. George showed him how to mow the lawn, as only George could do, and gave him pointers about outside projects. He also enjoyed playing with his granddaughter Mila and great-grandson Kingston.
With GMAC, George and Linda made several moves. They lived in Meridian, Mississippi, and Blytheville, Arkansas. Upon moving to Jonesboro, they joined Walnut Street Baptist Church, which was a relatively small church at the time. They have been members of Walnut Street for thirty-five years. George especially loved being in Ron Hatley's Sunday school class for many years, where Ron never failed to spread the Word each Sunday and shared many stories of winning lost souls to Christ. For the past few years, James Marconi has served as the class teacher, and George enjoyed the class so much. George and Linda loved to go out to eat every Sunday with their lunch friends, and the sound of laughter was heard throughout the restaurant.
George was known for his sense of humor and his big smile. He loved people and enjoyed joking around with each of them. He will be dearly missed.
Survivors include his wife, Linda; his daughters, Jenny Gammon (Craig) and Melanie Walton (Todd); his grandson, Daniel; his granddaughters, Courtney and Mila; his great-grandson, Kingston; his sister, Jane Taylor (Scotty); his niece, Courtney Trawick (Patrick); and his nephew, Bobby Bond (Dawn). He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty; his father, Thurman Sr.; and his sister, Mary McAdams Coleman.
