Thomas William Childs

August 29, 1944 — September 24, 2008

Thomas William Childs, 64, of Lafe, passed away September 24, 2008.

He was born August 29, 1944 to the late William Ira & Mary Florence (Wayne) Childs in Louisville, MS. His sister, Sarah Gale preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Connie Childs and step-daughter, Natalie Barnes of the home; 3 sons, Stephen Michael (Sherry), Robert Brian (Kricey) Childs, all of Jackson, MS, Thomas Scott Childs, Dorset, England; one sister, Barbara Childs of Montgomery, AL; one brother, Ira Wayne (Faith) Childs of Mobile, AL; five grandchildren, Brandon, Tyler, Kayla, Conner, and Andrew Childs; and a host of family and friends.

He was a member of the Beech Grove Baptist Church.

After leaving Louisville, Tommy moved to Brandon and began his truck driving career. In 1974, he started driving for Frito Lay. In June, 1999, he moved from Jackson to Jonesboro. After serving 28 ½ years and 2 million plus safe driving miles, he retired in February, 2003. Tommy loved to “piddle” and “dabble” in different projects and adventures. He never met a stranger and could always make even the grouchiest person smile. If he could have lived on attitude and determination he would have lived forever.

Serving as Pallbearer of Honor will be David Trantham.

Active pallbearers will be Dennis Carroll, Jimmy Miller, Greg Jones, Kirk McCall, Cornelius Heard, and Wayne Lenderman.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Frito Lay Jonesboro Traffic Team.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Emerson Memorial Chapel with Brother Randy Lingenfelter officiating. Burial will follow at Pine Log Cemetery. Emerson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Visitation will be Saturday from 11:00 until service time at the funeral home.
