Thomas Burkett

November 10, 1922 — April 23, 2023

Thomas Burkett, 100, of Searcy, Arkansas, died Sunday, April 23, 2023. Burkett was preceded in death by his wife Engel Lee Burkett and parents, Thomas Marion Burkett and Lillie Bell Rice Burkett. Three daughters survive Phyllis Burkett, Martha Nash and Susan (James) Clinton, all of Jonesboro.

He worked for the Soil Conservation Service for 32 years, now known as the Natural Resource Conservation Service. His career began as a Soil Scientist in Texas and Arkansas; he moved to Searcy in 1964 where he worked for 14 years as the District Conservationist and finished his career as the State Agronomist in the Little Rock office of the Soil Conservation Service, US Department of Agriculture. Searcy remained his home.

Burkett was a native of Faulkner County; graduated from Greenbrier High School in 1941 and joined the Army Air Force in 1943. After training in the Sheppard Field Texas and Lowery Field Colorado he joined the 17 th Bomb Group, a unit of B-26s in Sardinia, Corsica and was at Dijon, France at the end of World War II in Europe. In 1951, he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture from the University of Arkansas.
