Thomas Boyd, 93, of Jonesboro, died Monday at St. Bernard’s Medical Center. He had lived in Jonesboro since 1993. Prior to then, he spent 38 years in Springfield, MA, St. Louis, MO, and Little Rock, AR. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church. He was senior deacon for five years at the South Congregational Church, Springfield, MA; three years as President and Board Member of the Otter Creek Home Owners Association in Little Rock. Dr. Boyd received his B.S. Degree from the University of Arkansas, M.S. Degree and his PhD from Purdue University. He was elected to Phi Lambda Upsilon at Purdue in 1937 and Sigma Xi in 1939, both academic honors and recognition organizations. He enjoyed a successful scientific career with 65 published patents and three journal articles. He was a retired research chemist at Monsanto Co. He developed the process by which Monsanto produced vinyl chloride and polyvinyl chloride.
Dr. Boyd is survived by his wife, Henrietta Ungersma Boyd of the home; his sons, Thomas Boyd, III, Jonesboro, Steven Boyd, Siren, Wisconsin; his brother, Hugh Boyd, Tallmadge, Ohio, nine grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.
All services will be private with Emerson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
There will be no visitation.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that lasting memorials be made to First Presbyterian Church, 710 Southwest Drive, Jonesboro, AR 72401.
