Thelma Vernice Smith

Thelma Vernice Smith, 89, of Jonesboro, passed from this life on August 30, 2023 at the Craighead Nursing Center in Jonesboro. Vernice was born outside of Brookland on December 12, 1933 to the late James and Bessie Harris. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 61 years Dale Smith; and two sisters, Evelyn Chappel and Geneva Burrow.

Vernice grew up around Jonesboro and attended Valley View Church of Christ. She worked a few different jobs, but eventually retired from General Electric. Vernice was the family photographer. She loved taking and collecting pictures of those around her. She taught bible study and loved working with the pre-school age kids. Vernice was an avid country music fan. In fact, one of her favorite trips was to the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. She was also known as a good cook with her famous chocolate pie and fried chicken. Most importantly, Vernice loved being with her family.

Vernice is survived by her son, David Smith (Lisa) of Searcy; daughter, Suzanne Barnett (Ben) of Jonesboro; grandchildren Brad and Blake Barnett, Tennyson, Brody, and Wyatt Smith; and great-grandchildren Avery Barnett-Branum and Wil Barnett.

A funeral service will be held 2:00 pm Tuesday, September 5, 2023 at Emerson Funeral Home. A visitation will precede the service from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. Burial will follow the service at Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery.
