October 19, 1953 — December 30, 2009

Susan D. Smith, 56, of Jonesboro, died Wednesday, December 30, 2009, at her home of natural causes.

Susan was born in Jonesboro and lived much of her life here. She was a 1971 graduate of Jonesboro High School and a graduate of Arkansas State University. She taught school several years at West Elementary School in Jonesboro before retiring due to health. She was a past recipient of Jonesboro school’s “Teacher of the Year” award.

Susan was a long-time member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church where she was very active in committee work prior to retirement. She was an active member and leader in Alpha Gamma Delta and was preceded in death by her husband, Hal Smith, by her parents: Weldon and Margaret Douglas, and her mother-in-law, Marian Smith.

Survivors include 2 sons and daughters-in-law: Brian and Gayla Smith of Jonesboro, and Chad and Jenna Smith of Hot Springs;

1 sister: Jane Douglas Atherton of Jonesboro;

1 brother: James Douglas of Albuquerque, New Mexico;

2 grandchildren: Gavin Smith and Aiden Smith; and

Her father-in-law: Harold Smith of Jonesboro;

A graveside committal service will be held Saturday morning at 7:00 in Jonesboro Memorial Park with Rev. Beth Waldrup officiating. A memorial service will follow at 10:00 Saturday morning at St. Paul United Methodist Church with Emerson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Nephews Doug McDaniel, Christopher McDaniel, Dustin McDaniel, Mark Smith, Jason Smith, Scott Williams and Todd Williams will serve as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers include all of Susan’s loving friends.

There will be no public visitation.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that consideration be given to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 2201 S. Culberhouse, Jonesboro, AR 72401.
