Sister Mary Louise Frankenberger, Osb

Sister Louise Frankenberger, age 92, died about 8:00 a.m. on February 21, 2009 at Holy Angels Convent Infirmary. She was the oldest child born to Albert and Emma (Schaechtel) Frankenberger. She was born on May 2, 1916, in Bixby, Oklahoma, where her father worked in the oil fields. She had a younger sister who also entered Holy Angels Convent (Sister Conrad), and a brother, Eugene, both of whom preceded her in death. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Pauline Frankenberger and nieces and nephews.

Her father died in 1924 and was buried in Pocahontas where the family had roots. Her mother, with her three small children, returned to Pocahontas to make their home near family members.

Sister Louise attended St. Paul’s School, but transferred to Holy Angels Academy after her sophomore year to complete her high school education and join Holy Angels Convent. She made First Vows in 1935 before she began nurse’s training. The following year, she was assigned to teach 5th and 6th grade pupils at Blessed Sacrament School in Jonesboro.

She received her BS degree from St. Scholastica College in Atchison, Kansas and her Master’s Degree in Secondary Counseling, with majors in Biology and Library Science from Arkansas State University. In 1973, Sister Louise was awarded the Arkansas Outstanding Biology Teacher and received a valuable Microscope. Her teaching career was interspersed with assignments at the Motherhouse, as Prefect of the Academy and Formation Directress. From 1983 to 1986, she became the librarian at the Motherhouse, after which she retired.

Visitation and Rosary will be held at Holy Angels Convent Chapel on February 23, at 7:00 p.m. and Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on February 24. Interment will be in Our Lady of Mount Olivet Cemetery on the convent grounds under the direction of Emerson Funeral Home of Jonesboro. Pallbearers will be Knights of Columbus, Council 1720, Blessed Sacrament Parish, Jonesboro.
