Shirley Soo

Shirley Soo, 90, of Jonesboro died peacefully on August 31, 2023, in her home.

Shirley was born April 24, 1933, in Friars Point, Mississippi to the late Frank Lee Sr. and Sylvia Lee. She graduated from Lula Rich High School in 1947. She married Albert Soo of Marvell, AR on July 21, 1957. She attended the University of Mississippi where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science of Commerce in 1955. Her first job was in Marks, Mississippi where she taught high school business typing.

Shirley and Albert moved to the Jonesboro area in 1959 where they opened Soo’s Drug Store. Shirley was the business typing teacher at Nettleton High School from 1970-1984. After retiring from teaching, Shirley continued to help Albert run the pharmacy as bookkeeper.

Shirley and her husband Albert were active members of Nettleton Baptist Church and had been for many years. Shirley enjoyed seeing friends at church and especially loved visiting with her Sunday School class. In her spare time Shirley enjoyed needlepoint. She was an avid cook who was often found in the kitchen cooking meals, sweets, and traditional Chinese dishes. Shirley valued time spent with her family, especially as a mother and grandmother.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 65 years Albert Soo; brother Frank Lee Jr; infant sister Joy Lee; and sisters May Yang and Linda Lee.

She is survived by her son Mike Soo of Jonesboro, daughter Cindy Soo (Thomas Young) of San Francisco, California and daughter-in-law Krystal Soo of Jonesboro; brother Richard Lee (Clara) of Grenada, Mississippi; grandson Tyler Soo (Haley) of Jonesboro and granddaughter Natalee Soo of San Francisco, California; great grandsons Nathan Soo and Jackson Soo of Jonesboro.

A funeral service will be held at Emerson Funeral Home on Saturday September 9, 2023 at 10:30am and officiated by Brother Stan Ballard. Visitation will be held prior to the service at 9:30am. Graveside service will be held at Jonesboro Memorial Park directly after the funeral service.

Active pallbearers include Tyler Soo, Derek Lee, Todd Lee, Jeffrey Soo, Dexter Soo, and Hunter Hinton. Honorary pallbearers include Richard Lee, Thomas Young, Greg Lee, and Ashley Lee.
