U.S. Army Sgt. Charles Edwin Beaty, 26, of Lake City, Ark., died on December 3, 1950, in North Korea.
Sgt. Beaty was born in eastern Craighead County on April 14, 1924. He began his military service with the US Army on November 19, 1942, and served through W.W. II. He reenlisted in the Army on April 14, 1950 and was stationed in North Korea assigned to I Company, 3rd Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division.
Sgt. Beaty was killed in action on December 3, 1950, fighting in the Chosin Reservoir Battle near the town of Hagaru-Ri in North Korea, formerly known as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
Sgt. Beaty's medals and decorations include the Purple Heart, Army Good Conduct Medal, WW II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with one bronze service star, Combat Infantryman Badge, Presidential Unit Citation (Navy), Honorable Service Lapel Button WW II, United Nations Service Medal, Republic of Korea-Korean War Service Medal and the Korea Presidential Unit Citation.
Sgt. Beaty was preceded in death by his father, Babe Fletcher; his mother, Eva Howard; and his sister, Annette Fletcher Lippert.
Survivors include a nephew and his wife, Trent and Diane Fletcher of Jonesboro; a niece and her husband, Kim and Gary Despain of Lake City; and several great nephews, great nieces and cousins.
Sgt. Beaty's recovered body will be transported from the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii, and formally received with Honors at the Clinton National Airport in Little Rock on Friday.
Graveside funeral services with full military honors will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 19 at Lake City Cemetery with Emerson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will follow the ceremony at graveside.
