Seaman Gatlin Todd Cooper, U.S. Navy, age 21, of Jonesboro, Arkansas, died Friday morning, November 2, 2007, in Portsmouth, Virginia, of natural causes.
Born in Jonesboro, Gatlin was a 2004 graduate of Nettleton High School, a member of Nettleton Baptist Church, and the Harrisburg American Legion Post No. 14.
He entered the Navy in June 2006 and was stationed at Norfolk Naval Base. He was a Search and Rescue Swimmer and was awarded the Blue Jacket—Sailor of the Quarter--while assigned to the USS Theodore Roosevelt.
Survivors include: His mother and step father: Katrina and Jeremy Watson of Jonesboro;
His father: Micky Cooper of Harrisburg;
1 sister: Malory Paige Cooper of Jonesboro;
His grandparents: Tyrone and Kay Moye of Harrisburg, Carol Moye of Jonesboro, and Billy Ray and Sue Wilson Cooper of Harrisburg;
His great grandmother: Jewel Cooper of Jonesboro.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 9, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. at Emerson Memorial Chapel with Dr. Stan Ballard officiating. Burial will follow in Jonesboro Memorial Park with full military honors.
The U.S. Navy Honor Guard will serve as honorary pallbearers. Active pallbearers include: Tyler Cooper, Trevor Cooper, Ted Gary, Justin Griffin,Wes Mangrum, Aaron Dallas, Shane Cooper, and Opey Barr.
Visitation will be held on Thursday evening from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
