Sammy Wayne “Sam” Walker, 78, of Jonesboro died at home on Thursday, August 4, 2022. Sam was born at Weiner to his parents, Earl and Emma Walker on August 20, 1943.
Sam graduated from Weiner High School in 1961 and Arkansas State College in 1965. After college, he moved to St. Louis, Missouri to work for the U.S. Air Force’s Mapping Agency, later renamed the Defense Mapping Agency.
While in St. Louis, he served his country in the Missouri National Guard for six years. It was there in St. Louis that he met the love of his life, Lynda Lee Schepers, originally from Jefferson City, Missouri.
Lynda and Sam were married on June 7, 1969 in Jefferson City. Lynda was a registered nurse working at a St. Louis area hospital. Tragically, while leaving work on Friday, February 6, 1970, Lynda died unexpectedly. She was laid to rest in her hometown of Jefferson City.
In 1974, Sam decided to leave St. Louis and return to his parents’ home at Weiner, In 1975, he began work at USDA’s Farm Service Agency. He served as Office Manager for the Agency in Camden and Wynne, Arkansas.
In 1983, Sam transferred to the Arkansas State Farm Service Agency in Little Rock from which he retired in 1996 with 31 years of service. From 1997 thru 2010 he enjoyed working on his brother’s farm near Weiner during the busy planting and harvesting seasons.
Sam’s passions were fishing, hunting, and growing the best tasting tomatoes in his backyard garden.
Sam was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and a sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Ron McKensie of Florida, and brother-in-law Stanley Schepers of Missouri. He leaves behind his brother and sister-in-law, Gary and Linda Walker of Weiner, nephews Dewayne and James Walker of Weiner. Also, his niece Patricia “Trish” Priddy of Jonesboro, and niece Cindy McKensie and nephew Charles McKensie of Florida, and four sister-in-laws and one brother-in-law in Jefferson City Missouri, Elaine, Connie, Mary Ester and Mike.
A visitation will be held Sunday afternoon from 2-4 p.m. at Emerson Funeral Home.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, August 8, 2022 at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery in Jefferson City, Missouri.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Walker Cemetery 16161 Duck Puddle Road, Weiner, Arkansas 72479 or the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House, 1148 E. Matthews Ave, Jonesboro, AR 72401.
