Obituary

Roy Dossie “Dossie” Pack Jr., 89, passed away Wednesday, October 7, 2026, at the Flo & Phil Jones Hospice House in Jonesboro, Arkansas.

Born June 20, 1937, in Jonesboro, Arkansas, Dossie was the son of Roy Dossie Pack Sr. and Eva Mae Ellington Pack. He was a 1955 graduate of Jonesboro High School.

In 1957, Dossie married Calla Mae Cole, and together they shared 54 years of marriage, building a life filled with family, faith, adventure, and service to others until her passing on October 20, 2011.

During the 1960s and early 1970s, Dossie and Calla Mae owned and operated LaVera’s Beauty School and Pack’s Hair Fashions in Jonesboro. They later moved to Fort Worth, Texas, where Dossie pursued his theological education at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, graduating in 1978.

From 1978 through 1993, Dossie and Calla Mae devoted fifteen years of their lives to caring for nearly 300 children in Texas. Together, they opened not only their home but their hearts to children who needed love, compassion, safety, structure, guidance, grace, discipline, and a place to call home. They created a home instead of an institution and a family instead of foster care. For Dossie and Calla Mae, caring for children, the elderly, or family members of any age was not an obligation; it was a calling.

In 1993, Dossie and Calla Mae returned to Jonesboro, Arkansas, to provide full-time care for Calla Mae’s foster mother, Nora Griffin. Their return home marked another chapter in a lifetime devoted to caring for others, reflecting their belief that family was defined not only by blood, but by love, commitment, and the willingness to be there when needed.

His love of learning new skills and working with his hands led him to the shoe repair business. In 1994, Dossie and Calla Mae purchased Smith Shoe Repair in Jonesboro, later renaming it Pack’s Soles & Heels. His desire to further develop his skills led him to the Merrell Institute of Bootmaking in Vernal, Utah, where he studied under Randy Merrell, co-founder of the Merrell Boot Company. He also attended Oklahoma State University at Okmulgee, where he pursued his education in pedorthics and earned his pedorthist license.

Dossie was deeply rooted in his Christian faith, with an inquisitive mind and an unquenchable desire to understand God’s Word beyond the surface. He loved a good discussion, especially if it turned into a debate.

Blessed with a brilliant mind, endless curiosity, and a remarkable ability to figure out how things worked, Dossie was a man who loved a challenge. Dossie enjoyed the freedom of the open road. He especially loved riding his Honda Gold Wing motorcycle through the mountains and along the West Coast, embracing the beauty of the countryside and the adventure of the journey.

To his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, time spent with Daddy Pack was an adventure waiting to happen. There were Oreos to share, messes to be made, lawnmower rides, science experiments, gardens to pick, motorcycle rides to enjoy, and neighborhood parades to be had. And no grandchild was ever entirely safe from his playful threats to eat their toes! He had a way of turning ordinary afternoons into memories that would last a lifetime.

Dossie was a man of many dimensions—a deep thinker, a craftsman, a teacher, an adventurer, and a man of strong convictions. He possessed both the determination to build things with his hands and compassion to help those who could not help themselves. His life was filled with lessons, laughter, challenges, and countless stories that will continue to be told by those who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his three daughters and their husbands: Pam (Pack) and Freddy Gregg of Conway, Arkansas; Karen (Pack) and Craig Bayless of Fort Worth, Texas; and Lisa (Pack) and Kerry Wilkinson of Jonesboro, Arkansas.

He is also survived by his siblings, Aubry Pack, Elaine Payton, and Eloise Stowe, along with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Calla Mae Cole Pack; his parents, Roy Dossie Pack Sr. and Eva Mae Ellington Pack; his siblings, Nathan Pack, Lawanda Gott, Retha Schishler, Jerry Pack, and Curtis Pack; and his great-grandsons, Ellis and Luca.

Dossie’s legacy cannot be measured simply by the years he lived, the things he built, or the accomplishments he achieved. It lives in the hundreds of children who found a home and a fresh start, in the family he loved, in the lessons he shared, and in the countless memories he leaves behind.

He leaves behind a lifetime of stories, a family who will continue telling them, and a legacy of faith, love, and determination that will endure for generations.

Funeral service arrangements will be added when available.
