Etter
Oct 6, 1940 — Aug 13, 2026
Jonesboro
Robert “Bob” J. Etter, 85, of Jonesboro, Arkansas, passed away peacefully at NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital on August 13, 2026.
Bob was born and raised in Jonesboro, where he spent his entire life building lasting friendships, raising his family, and creating countless memories with the people he loved. He attended North Elementary School, Annie Camp Junior High, and graduated from Jonesboro High School. He later earned an associate degree from Jonesboro Business College.
Bob proudly served six years in the National Guard, attaining the rank of E-5 Sergeant. Following his military service, he began a long and distinguished career with the railroad. He worked as an engineer for 31½ years with the Cotton Belt, Southern Pacific, and Union Pacific Railroad systems.
A true outdoorsman, Bob enjoyed fishing and spending time outside. He was an avid sports fan who loved watching and listening to Razorback and Arkansas State athletics, as well as Cardinals baseball. He also had a special appreciation for music, particularly the Beach Boys. But above all his hobbies and interests, Bob treasured time spent with his family.
Bob was a true believer in Christ and was a member of Walnut Street Baptist Church. His faith was an important part of his life, as was his love for family and friends. He will be remembered as a devoted family man whose grandchildren were his pride and joy.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Leslie and Pauline Etter; his brothers, Wayne Etter and Bill Etter; and his sister, Ruby Hinson.
He is survived by his loving wife, Darlene Etter; his son, Justin Etter (Amanda) of Jonesboro; his grandchildren, Ruby Caroline Etter, Jack Robert Etter, and Ryan Blake Etter; his brothers, Gary Etter (Emily) of Jonesboro and Mike Etter (Linda) of Jonesboro; his sisters, Sharon Goodman of Jonesboro, Karen Nicholson of Mountain Home, and Rhonda Clairday of Jonesboro; his sister-in-law, Sarita Etter; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Bob’s legacy will live on through the family he loved so deeply, the friendships he cherished, and the many memories he leaves behind. His family will especially remember his love, his faith, and the joy he found in being a grandfather.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 18th 9-10am, followed by a graveside service at Pine Log Cemetery at 10:30am, officiated by Keith Baker.
Pallbearers will be Jack Etter, Ryan Etter, Steve Hinson, Jeff Goodman, Jason Goodman, Steven Etter, Wayne Etter, Jeremy Nicholson, Blake Easley, and Stacy Crowe.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Walnut Street Baptist Church.
Bob will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
