Opal U. Smothermon, 77, of Jonesboro, passed from this life on Wednesday, June 10, 2020, at the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House in Jonesboro.
Born in Trumann, Opal lived all of her life in Jonesboro and was a 1960 graduate of Nettleton High School. She worked several years as an administrative assistant for a general insurance agency in Jonesboro before changing careers. In the late 1980s Opal returned to school and earned a degree in cosmetology science and worked full time in that field until she retired last year.
Opal attended the First Assembly of Northeast Arkansas in Jonesboro and above other activities enjoyed spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mickey Smothermon, her parents: Charley and Hazel Forbis Phillips; and brother Phil Phillips.
Survivors include 1 son and daughter-in-law: Carey and Tracy Smothermon;
1 sister, Jo Gambill, 1 brother, Joel Phillips, and 2 grandchildren Sydney Smothermon and Jackson Smothermon, all of Jonesboro.
Graveside funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday in Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Patrick Lander officiating and Emerson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Emerson Funeral Home will announce at the service the Arkansas Health Department directives for safe social distancing at outdoor venues.
There will be no visitation.
