Nancy Elrod Haynes

April 5, 1932 — February 26, 2024

Nancy Carolyn Elrod Haynes, 91, of Jonesboro passed from this life into eternal glory on Monday February 26, 2024, at 7 p.m. at the Flo & Phil Jones Hospice House.  She was born April 5, 1932, in Little Rock, AR, to Edwin Fay and Mary Gladys Hall Elrod.

Nancy graduated from Jonesboro High School and Arkansas State College before moving to Washington D.C. in 1953.  There she worked for the National Science Foundation before going to work for American Airlines as a reservationist and secretary.  In 1957 she married Perry Francis Haynes and they moved to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, where she continued to work for American Airlines, and where both of her sons Ken and Eric were born.  In 1969 they moved to New Orleans, Louisiana, and then to Slidell, Louisiana in 1971 where Nancy worked for Sears as the store manager’s secretary and trainer before retiring in 1993.  Nancy and Perry returned to Jonesboro in 2000.

Nancy belonged to First United Methodist in Slidell, Louisiana, where she served as chairman of worship, was on the finance committee and evangelism committee.  After returning to Jonesboro, and after Perry’s death in 2002, Nancy volunteered at First United Methodist Church as an Office Angel and on the FUMC Care Team.

Nancy loved her family dearly, especially the “grands.”  She was an avid sports fan, particularly following Arkansas State University teams, and LSU, where her oldest son Ken graduated.  Her favorite pastime was volunteering at “the church,” wherever she lived.

She was preceded in death by her parents Fay and Gladys Elrod; her husband of 46 years, Perry Francis Haynes; an infant sister, Wanda Faye, and a dear older sister, Elaine E. Simmons.

Nancy is survived by her sons, Kenneth (Tammie) Haynes of Ridgeland, Mississippi and Eric Haynes of Virginia Beach, Virginia; sisters, Janice Leatherwood of Sunnyvale, California, and Martha Lynn Hurt of Jonesboro; grandchildren, Evan Haynes, Grace Anne Byrd (Scott), Andy Haynes, Olivia Yeager (Braxton), Lydia Francis Haynes and Luke Hatch Haynes, as well as great-grandchildren, Sophie Anne Byrd, Will Byrd and Brooks Byrd.

The funeral service will be held Friday, March 1st, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. John Miles officiating.  Burial will follow the service at Oaklawn Cemetery.

Visitation will be held prior to the service from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donating to either First Methodist Church of Jonesboro or to Breaking Bonds Ministry.
