Myra Eleanor Wright, 90, a long-time Jonesboro resident passed away November 26, 2023. Myra was born to Thomas and Nellie Cooksey on June 29, 1933 near Geary Oklahoma. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years Dr. Donald E. Wright (ASU), brothers Allyn, Billy and Darrell Cooksey.
Myra was a retired teacher (Trumann Elementary). She attended Oklahoma State University and obtained a BSE from West Texas University and a MSE from Arkansas State University. She enjoyed crafts, traveling and playing bridge. Myra and Don were strong supporters of ASU, both in academics and athletics. An avid genealogist, she compiled several books researching the history of the family.
Myra attended the Methodist Church all of her life, a member of Cornerstone Methodist Church, in later years attended Mount Carmel UMC. She was an active member of United Methodist Women as well as the Daughters of American Revolution, Delta Kappa Gamma, ASU’s Faculty Women’s Association, a book club, and several other organizations. She was very proud of her family and enjoyed spending time with them.
Survivors include children Alan Wright (Doris) of Hot Springs, Arkansas, Donnell Reece (Mike) of Gamaliel, Arkansas, Robert Wright (Kim) of Celina, Texas and Susan Chadwick (Kevin) of Jonesboro. Grandchildren: Jacob Wright (Kayla) of New Port Richey, Florida, Cheston Wright (Heather) of Springdale, Matt Reece (Katie) of Jonesboro, Greg Reece (Lindsey) of Slidell, Louisiana, Cody Wright (Suzy) of Gainesboro, Tennessee, Clint Wright of Montgomery, Alabama, Jonathan Flemon (Bailey) of Jonesboro, Ashely Flemon of Jonesboro, Jodi Henry (Evan) of Jonesboro. Myra is also survived by nine great-grandchildren, as well as numerous friends, colleagues and former students.
Graveside services will be provided by Emerson Funeral Home with Edward Pruett presiding on Tuesday, December 5, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at the Nettleton Cemetery
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the Don and Myra Education Scholarship Endowment at Arkansas State University or to the Alzheimer’s Association for dementia research.
