Mildred Hout Freeman

Mildred Hout Freeman, 91, of Jonesboro, died Friday evening at St. Elizabeth’s Place in Jonesboro.

Born September 30, 1919, in Tuckerman to Judson and Cliffie Roberts Hout, Mildred attended Arkansas State University where she reigned as Homecoming Queen in 1938. She was a former teacher at Newport High School before embarking on a career as a fraternity house mother. Mildred began at the University of Arkansas in 1965 and continued her duties at the University of Missouri, University of Mississippi, Louisiana State University and ended her career where she began, at the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity at the University of Arkansas.

Mildred was a founding member of the Jonesboro Junior Auxiliary and the Tally Ho Bridge Club. She was an avid tennis player and was a summer camp tennis coach in Maine for many years.

Upon retirement, Mildred continued to be active and was a founding member of St. Timothy Anglican Church where she worked with the kitchen crew on weekly Sunday lunches at the church.

Mildred’s surviving family includes one son and daughter-in-law: Woody and Lynda Freeman; two granddaughters, Brooks Freeman Brown and Tory Dee Freeman; and two great grandsons, Hudson Freeman Brown and Holden Worthing Brown.

Funeral services will be held Monday, February 28, 2011, at 1:00 at St. Timothy’s Anglican Church, 419 W. Highland, in Jonesboro with Rev. Father Ron Martin officiating. A reception will follow the service in Parish Hall.

A committal service will be held Monday afternoon at 4:00 at Gracelawn Cemetery in Tuckerman with Emerson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Active pallbearers include: Ray Hall, John Phelps, Mike Fullington, Todd Brown, Bob Dobson and Jim Scurlock. Honorary pallbearers include former officers of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity at the University of Arkansas: Marvin Day, Chuck Welch, Jason Willett, Ted Dickey and Brian Dover.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home.
