Michael David Dickens (36), of Jonesboro, AR, was born in New Orleans, LA on June 23, 1987. He was the son of Robin Wright Ray and M. David Dickens. He passed from this world on April 3, 2024.
Growing up in Jonesboro, AR, he spent most of his time on the baseball field or basketball court. Many weekends, you’d find Michael with his sister and cousins roaming and playing at his Puddy and Papa’s house. He was charming, charismatic, and always the “ladies’ man.” Michael had many childhood friends who were like brothers to him. As young boys do, they’d often get into mischief, but his endearing demeanor and infectious smile could usually get him out of trouble. He was adventurous, fearless, and loved a good challenge.
In 2005, Michael had a son, Kai David Dickens. Michael loved teaching Kai things – how to throw a baseball, dribble a basketball, ride a horse, read, and play guitar. Michael coached Kai’s basketball teams over the years. As Kai grew up, it became apparent that he shared his daddy’s charm and irresistible smile.
Always a fitness enthusiast, Michael went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Arkansas State University. He then worked as a personal trainer, combining his love of fitness and helping people into a rewarding career for several years.
In June 2014, while working as a personal trainer, Michael met Heather and quickly realized that he had just met his best friend and future partner. After dating for two years, they committed to building their lives together in Jonesboro with their two dogs, Cece and Lightning. He and Heather loved spending time at his Papa and Puddy’s farm, watching movies, singing karaoke, and holding the undefeated (although not undisputed) title of family spades champion. Michael often said, “loving Heather felt like Home.”
Michael eventually transitioned into a Patient Care Advocate role, using his personal experience and talents to assist amputee patients regain full mobility. Most recently, Michael was the manager at Southern Airways Express at the Jonesboro Municipal Airport.
Michael is survived by his loving partner, Heather Dale Coats. He is also survived by his son, Kai David Dickens; his parents, Robin Wright Ray and David (Dianne) Dickens; his sister Amanda “Mandy” (Nic) Smith; his nephews and niece, Evan, Ryan, and Avenly Smith; his grandmothers, Pat “Puddy” Wright and Louise Dickens; his aunt and uncles, Toni (Kim) Inboden, Steven Dickens, and Greg Dickens; his cousins, Lee (Tabitha) Inboden and Mary Hollis Inboden; his stepsister and stepbrothers, Misty (Shannon) May, TJ (Laura) Holcomb, Dylan, Tanner, and Logan Ray; and many other relatives and loved ones who will miss him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Freddie Dale Dickens and Jackie “Jack” Glenn Wright, and his stepfather, Larry Dale Ray.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, at Emerson Funeral Home, located at 1629 E. Nettleton Avenue, Jonesboro, AR 72401.
