Mary Ruth Scholes, 94, of Jonesboro, died Monday, February 19, 2024. She was born on February 3, 1930, in Conway, Arkansas to W.A. and Ada Morgan. She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers, Vernon, Noel, Elmer, Garlon, A.W. Jr., and Samuel; Three sisters, Elsie Tucker, Edna Mae McGough and Ruby Thompson Norris, her husband, Carl for 61 years, and her only beloved son, Steven Carl Scholes.
Survivors are daughter-in-law, Leslie of Long Beach California; two grandchildren, Matthew and his wife, Rosie of Garden Grove, California; Ashlee and her husband, Jacob Enzensperger of Laguna Nigel, California; four great grandchildren, Madison and Connor Scholes, Tayler Henemyer and Terrah Enzensperger of California. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews who held a very important place in her life.
She was married to Carl Scholes in Piggott, Arkansas, on July 3, 1949, after she graduated from high school there. As an Army wife, her first home was in Chicago, Illinois. When Carl went overseas, she came back to Piggott to live with her parents. When he returned, they moved to California where they lived until they retired.
She served as church secretary in Redondo Beach, California, Torrance, California and Piggott Arkansas. She worked at South Bay Union High School District in Redondo Beach, as Account Clerk for Student Activities, Accounting Clerk in the District office in charge of certificated payroll for four schools, and secretary to Vice Principal at Mira Costa High School. In each of these positions she worked with many students who may not have graduated without her encouragement.
She moved to Jonesboro in 1988, where eight of her family members were living. For several years, she was involved in family night at least once a week.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Jonesboro where she was active in all the activities of Women’s Missionary Fellowship and the Phebean Sunday School Class. She enjoyed serving as greeter welcoming those who came to church. She served as leader in bible Study Fellowship for a number of years. She was a faithful member of South Bay Baptist Church in Torrance, before moving to Jonesboro. She was Sunday School Superintendent, Women’s Missionary Fellowship President, choir member, and served on many committees. She always said her friends there were her extended family and kept in touch with many of them after moving to Arkansas.
Funeral services will be 2:00 PM, Saturday, February 24,2024, at Emerson Memorial Chapel with Ross Burton officiating and Emerson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
