Marion “Charles” Atherton, 82, of Jonesboro passed from this life on Sunday, August 26, 2018 at the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House. He was born on January 14, 1936 in Goldthwaite, Texas to the late Alfred and Bernis Atherton. Charles was a member at Nettleton Baptist Church. He owned and operated Diamond Roofing for 40 years. Charles was a free spirit who never met a stranger. He was very outgoing and enjoyed talking and visiting.
Charles was a sportsman and enjoyed being outdoors, especially when he was hunting and fishing. In Charles’s later years he enjoyed going to the senior center and visiting with his friends. In addition to his parents, Charles is preceded in death by his brothers, Bruce Atherton and Edward Atherton.
Charles is survived by his wife of 62 years, Anita Atherton of Jonesboro; son, David Atherton of Jonesboro; daughters, Debra Sterling of Jonesboro and Lisa Roberts (Keith) of Jonesboro; grandchildren, Garrett Roberts (Michelle), Kyle Roberts, Cameron Roberts, Michael Sterling (Tiffany), Karen Freeman, Doug McDaniel (Natalie), Chris McDaniel (Sarah), and Dustin McDaniel. Charles also leaves behind 16 great grandchildren and a host of other family and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 30, 2018 at Emerson Funeral Home with Rev. James Strait officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery with the active pallbearers being Garrett Roberts, Kyle Roberts, Cameron Roberts, Doug McDaniel, Cody Noe, Nathan Freeman, Dustin McDaniel, and Michael Sterling.
There will be a family visitation from 4:30 -5:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening at Emerson Funeral Home with the public visitation being from 5:00– 7:00 p.m.
