Marcy Monroe Harrell, 83, died Monday, May 4, 2009, at St. Bernard’s Regional Medical Center. Born in Searcy, Arkansas, Mr. Harrell lived in Black Rock, Arkansas during his school years and then served four years in the Navy during World War II.
Upon his discharge in 1946, he married his high school sweetheart, Wanda Driskell, and they lived in Detroit, Michigan for 17 years. In 1959, the Harrells returned to Arkansas to help Marcy’s father run Harrell’s Shoe Store in Black Rock. Moving the store to Walnut Ridge, the family relocated to 321 W. Hazel Street. Harrell’s Shoe Outlet was a family business; everyone in the family worked in the store—Wanda worked diligently, Candy worked for fun, and Pam worked the days before a market trip to ensure that she got first choice of the new stock.
Mr. Harrell was a faithful member of the Walnut Ridge First Baptist Church and a dedicated worker of 59 years for the Lion’s Club. He had more than 30 years of perfect attendance. He served in many positions, from Tail Twister to State Secretary. He continued his civic work after he and Wanda moved to Jonesboro four years ago, and most recently, served on the board of Dyeann’s House, a residence for families with medical needs. Marcy retired from the Douglas Division of Scott and Fetzer Corporation in the early 90s. Retirement suited him—Coffee every morning with his buddies, vacations to Gulf Shores with family and friends. Moving to Jonesboro was the beginning of a new adventure for Marcy. A daily visitor of the St. Bernard’s Senior Life Center, his new friends discovered that Black Rock boys played pool with skill and quiet determination. His friends at First Baptist Church in Jonesboro quickly became dear to him and made his life happy and wonderful.
Mr. Harrell was a loving son, a faithful husband, and a precious father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Preston and Thelma Louise Anderson Harrell, and his older brother, Bill Harrell of Phoenix, Arizona. Mr. Harrell leaves behind his wife, Wanda Driskell Harrell, his younger brother, Max Harrell of Kansas City, Missouri, his daughters, Candy Harrell and Pamela Bush and son-in-law, Ben Bush. ‘Papa’ loved his grand children, Tiffany Bush Meyer, Jordan Bush McIntire, and Tanner Bassett. Their spouses were also precious to him—Ryan Meyer, Jeremy McIntire, and Sarah Bassett. And his great-grand children, Ella and Grace Bassett, Aiden and Saylor Meyer, and Haley-Anne and Brinlea McIntire, will have memories of the love Papa Harrell bestowed.
Funeral services will be 10:00 Thursday, May 7, 2009, at Emerson Memorial Chapel with Dr. Bruce Tippit officiating and burial to follow with military honors at Lawrence Memorial Cemetery and Emerson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers are Tom Sloan, Dr. Ralph Joseph, Ralph Clark, Leroy Lacy, Jerry D. Bassett, Ben Bush, Tanner Bassett, Dr. Ryan Meyer, and Jeremy McIntire. Honorary pallbearers are the University Heights Lion Club and his Fellowship Sunday School Class at First Baptist Church in Jonesboro.
Visitation will be from 5 – 7 Wednesday night at Emerson Funeral Home.
