Maralyn Holmes, 94, of Jonesboro passed from this life on Friday, September 29, 2017. She was born to the late Charlie and Iva Bishop on February 24, 1923 in Gilkerson, Arkansas. Maralyn was a member of Walnut Street Baptist Church and enjoyed taking part in their ministry of making hats and blankets for children and cancer patients. When Maralyn was younger she taught school in Fisher and played piano/organ for the First Baptist Church of Bay and Cathedral Church in Jonesboro. She was a seamstress and enjoyed making quilts; she was even did alterations during World War II for the US Armed Services. Maralyn was a “Jack of All Trades” and was well known for her decorative floor tiling. In addition to her parents, Maralyn is preceded in death by her husband, Alton Holmes.
Maralyn is survived by her son, Mark Holmes (Phyllis); twin sister, Aliene Simmons; and grandchildren Devon Shouse, Joel Holmes (Kelli), Kathryn Holmes, and Hannah Holmes. Maralyn also leaves behind nine great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.
The visitation will be held on Sunday from 2:00 – 4:00 pm at Emerson Funeral Home.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, October 2, 2017 at Emerson Funeral Home with Bro. Jerry Parker officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery. The honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Tice, Jerry Simmons, Joel Holmes, and Tyler Cavner.
