Maggie Mcraven

May 7, 1925 — December 28, 2020

Once in a great while, there exists someone who defies time.  Their youthful countenance, cheery outlook, and positive spirit are such that years simply fade in the wake of a sunny disposition, a genuine smile and an indelible sense of fun.  A true estimation of age is impossible, because the external factors that define people as “old” do not impact these select few. They retain a vivacious personality and a permanent twinkle in their eyes.   “Maggie” McRaven was such an individual.  In a world that could be negative she was an absolute positive.  Her youthful appearance and lively countenance could brighten any room.

Mrs. Mary Magline Newman McRaven, passed to her heavenly home December 28, 2020, in Little Rock, Arkansas at the age of 95.  She was born May 7, 1925, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Lawrence Newman in Conran, Missouri.  She was a graduate of Portageville High School and received two degrees from Arkansas State University.   She married Alvin J. McRaven in 1953 and since 1965 the couple made their home in Jonesboro, Arkansas.  Dr. McRaven was a Professor of Counseling Psychology at Arkansas State University, while Mrs. McRaven, served as a mathematics educator with Westside and Jonesboro Public Schools.  They enjoyed an active social life with friends and colleagues.  Their home was often the “gathering place” where fun times and lively banter ensued.  Maggie was a lifelong learner and teacher, well known for being an accomplished bridge player and teacher who achieved a Bronze Master Life rating.

Mrs. McRaven was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Dr. Alvin McRaven; her parents, Mr. John Lawrence and Mrs. Clara Violet Duncan Newman; two siblings, Mrs. Loyetta Rice and Mr. William Denzel Newman.  Her family includes two daughters, Dr. Claudia Marie Tolleson and husband William of Little Rock, Arkansas and Dr. Sandra Corinne Massey and husband Ward of Jonesboro, Arkansas; two grandchildren, Brittany Marie Brimhall and husband Doug of Jonesboro, Arkansas and Reese Ward Massey of Tulsa, Oklahoma; five great granddaughters, Maybelle “Scout” of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Maggie Marie, Ava Corinne, Ava Juliena and Erin Elizabeth of Jonesboro, Arkansas.
