TO VIEW MEMORIAL SLIDESHOW
Madge Marie Hall Shirley, 98, of Jonesboro, passed away Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House in Jonesboro. She was born in Ash Flat, AR on October 5, 1919 to John and Rosalee Hall. She and Alfred Shirley were married June 14, 1942.
She was a faithful member of Nettleton church of Christ for many years until her health prevented her from attending. She enjoyed giving others rides to church, then later riding the church bus when she was no longer able to drive. Her warmth and beautiful smile were comforts to the nursing home residents she visited on Sunday evenings. Madge combined her love of sewing and children with her desire to help others by working with the Care Bear Ladies Group to make small bears for children in local hospitals. She was also an active member and fundraiser for Women of Crowley’s Ridge College in Paragould.
Madge also loved flowers, especially roses, and could seemingly make a stick grow with her tender care. When she moved into an assisted living apartment, her family made sure she still had flower baskets and raised flower beds to tend. She also loved to birdwatch and make quilts. Her children and grandchildren treasure the items she made for them over the years.
Madge was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Othel Harrison and Lottie Sisk, and six brothers Arvil Hall, Jewel Hall, Dallas Hall, Burnice Hall and Floyd Hall. Alfred Shirley also preceded her in death.
She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law: Thomas and Ann Shirley of Brentwood, TN; Johnnie and Brenda Shirley of Jackson, MO; Rick and Kim Shirley of Marion, AR; a daughter and son-in-law Louan and Bill Millsap of Jonesboro, AR. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.
Funeral service will be Friday afternoon 2:00p.m. in the Emerson Memorial Chapel with Michael Meredith officiating. Interment will take place at Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery. Honored to serve as pallbearers are Todd Shirley, Terry Shirley, Zach Shirley, Nathan Shirley, Josiah Shirley, and Brian Gibson.
Visitation will be Thursday evening from 5-7p.m. at Emerson Funeral Home.
For lasting memorials the family has requested that you consider donations be made to Children’s Home of Paragould.
