Lavern Powell Smith, 81, of Batesville, died Thursday, March 20, 2008, at her home. She had lived in Batesville for the past twenty years, moving there from Jonesboro, Arkansas. She was a member of the Ruddell Hill Baptist Church and was known in the Batesville area as “Granny Smith” for her work in the Happy Day Preschool. She loved the adventure of life. Lavern loved the “adventure of life.”
She was preceded in death by her husband, Wrex L. Smith, her parents T. J. and Louisa Powell, and twelve brothers and sisters.
She is survived by her daughters Pat Ring and husband George, Ann Crabtree and husband, Larry, all of Batesville; one brother Alton Powell, Walcott, Arkansas; two sisters, Louella Duffell, Jonesboro; Edna Myrle Champion, Memphis, Tennessee; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M., Saturday, March 22, 2008 at Emerson Memorial Chapel with Pastor Allen Brown, Pastor Mike Powell, and Eulogist Larry Duffell officiating with burial to follow at Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery and Emerson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Nephews will serve as pallbearers. Visitation will be from 6 – 8 Friday night at Emerson Funeral Home.
