Lavada Lois “Sister George” George, 80, of Jonesboro passed from this life on Thursday, June 30, 2016 at St. Bernards Medical Center.
Lavada Lois George was born on August 7, 1935 in Walnut Ridge to the late Ira A. and Bessie Rainwater Butler. While growing up she did not have an opportunity to go to high school, but later in life in her spare time she earned her high school diploma and five college degrees through Lighthouse Christian College. She has written several publications for school and college study materials. She also spoke at many church and school conventions. She had a passion for missions especially traveling over to the Philippines, Brazil, Paraguay, and Jamaica. She sent tracts and Bible lessons to more than a hundred nations. Throughout her career she was a school teacher, principal, pastor’s wife, secretary for the Apostolic Independent Missions. She was a mother to eleven children and more than twenty foster children throughout her life. Sister George and her late husband Rev. C.E. George spent over 48 years in the ministry together until his passing in 1999. After his passing she continued on with her love and passion for the Lord until her last breath.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Edward “Rev. C.E.” George; three brothers, Virgil Sawyer, Ira Butler, and Stanley Butler; and one grandson, Gregory Goolsby.
Sister George is survived by two sons, Mark George (Jenny) of St. Louis, MO and Joel George of Nashville, TN; nine daughters, Annette George of Tupelo, MS, Debra Ryan of Melville, LA, Rhonda Bass (Gary) of Columbia, TN, Carol McCain of Paragould, Sherlyn Burnette (Joey) of Jayess, MS, Juanetta Gobin (Ron) of Murphysboro, IL, Angela Redd (Keith) of Columbia, TN, Lanelda Tilley (Wendell) of Jonesboro, and Anita Huddleston (Randy) of Jonesboro; one brother, Lonnie Butler of Maynard; one sister, Jewel Snider of Pocahontas; twenty nine grandchildren; thirty five great grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; a dear niece and Skip-Bo partner, Joyce Ann Cummings; and a host of other family and friends.
Funeral service will be Sunday, July 3, 2016 at 1pm in the Emerson Memorial Chapel with Rev. Brad Robinson officiating. Interment will directly follow at Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery.
Honored to serve as pallbearers are Sister George’s son in laws; Gary Bass, Ron Gobin, Wendell Tilley, Joey Burnett, Keith Redd, and Randy Huddleston. Honorary pallbearers will be all Sister George’s grandchildren.
Visitation will be Saturday evening from 4-8pm at Emerson Funeral Home.
