Laura J. Carter, 56, of Jonesboro, died Sunday evening at the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House in Jonesboro.

Born at Fort Benning, Georgia, Laura lived in New Orleans before moving to Jonesboro in 1983. She was a Valley View Elementary School teacher for 19 years before medical retirement. Laura was a graduate of Arkansas State University with a Bachelor of Science in Education, was certified in Library Science and was a member of the National Education Association.

Laura enjoyed ceramics and tole painting and collecting angels. She was preceded in death by her father, James Hay.

Survivors include her husband of 39 years, Jerry L. Carter, of the home;

Her mother, June Hay of Memphis;

3 sons and daughters-in-law: Bubba and Jamie Carter, Skip and Kim Carter, and Josh and Maryanne Carter, all of Jonesboro;

1 brother, Jay Hay of Memphis,

2 sisters: Jo Griffith of Memphis and Jackie Camp of Clarksville, Tennessee;

5 grandchildren: Kaleb Brown, Kagen Brown, Larson Carter, Lauren Carter, and Morrison Carter.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 in Emerson Memorial Chapel with Dr. Bruce Tippit officiating. Private burial will follow in McDaniel Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Monday evening, 4-6, at Emerson Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that consideration be given to the American Cancer Society or the Laura Carter Memorial Scholarship at Valley View Elementary School, Attn. Sherry Moody, 2119 Valley View Dr., Jonesboro, AR 72404.
