Kenneth Burns

January 27, 1931 — June 1, 2025

Kenneth Edward "Ken" Burns, 94, passed peacefully from this life on Sunday, June 1, 2025, at the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House. He was born on January 27, 1931, in Steele, Missouri, to the late Hubert and Nettie Burns.

Ken, lovingly known as "Pokey" to those who knew him best, was a longtime resident of Cardwell and a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church of Cardwell. He was the proud owner of Burns Variety Store in Cardwell until its closing in 1974.

A man devoted to service and community, Ken was a longtime Boy Scoutmaster, where he mentored and guided countless young men over the years. He was also a dedicated member of the Rotary Club, living out its motto of “Service Above Self” in both word and deed.

Ken had many passions throughout his life. He enjoyed collecting coins, working with his hands through carpentry, and sharing stories that left lasting impressions on friends and family alike.

In addition to his parents, Ken was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sue Ellen Burns, and his brothers, Joe Burns and Bill Burns.

He is survived by his children: James "Jim" Burns (Kelley Pezzella) of Bonita Springs, Florida; John Burns (Lisa) of Rockwood, Michigan; and Angie Mills (Brad) of Jonesboro. He also leaves behind a cherished legacy through his grandchildren: Alecia Faber (Steve), Kristy Exner (Dave), Taylor Higginbotham, and Legend Mills (Andrea Devarie); great-grandchildren: Lexi Faber-Stench, Dylan Faber, Leah Exner, Logan Exner, and Alonzo Mills; and one great-great-grandchild, Brewer Stench.

A small visitation in his honor will be held Wednesday afternoon, June 4, from 4:30 to 5:00 p.m. at Emerson Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at Cardwell Cemetery in Cardwell, Missouri on Thursday, June 5, 2025 at 10:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Cardwell Cemetery, P.O. Box 482, Cardwell, MO 63829.

Ken will be remembered for his kind heart, strong hands, servant spirit, and timeless stories. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
