Katherine W. McCracken, 93, a lifetime resident of Jonesboro, died Tuesday, April 5, 2022, at the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House. She was born November 7, 1928 in Jonesboro to Charles Preston Winters and Margaret Warr Winters Wall. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Jonesboro. She retired as a teacher from Jonesboro Public Schools after 28 years of service. She enjoyed giving back to her community. Mrs. McCracken was in the first class of the Master Gardeners, and their class project was landscaping for the brand-new Forrest L. Wood Nature Center. She volunteered with the St. Bernards Auxiliary. Traveling was fun for her with friends and family, especially trips to England. Every day, she walked three miles and also enjoyed birdwatching and working in her yard. Music was her passion. To sum up her life, she was a giver of love, education and appreciation of good friends. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Survivors include her son, Andy McCracken of Memphis; daughter, Marilyn McCracken Hummelstein and husband, Sam of Jonesboro; three grandchildren, Charles McCracken and wife Chloe, Joey McCracken and Sam McCracken.
Katherine was blessed to have many wonderful caregivers. Dr. Darrell Ragland offered care, compassion, a steady hand, and a willing ear. Also, special thanks to the staff and her many friends at St. Bernards Village where she thrived on walks, games, and time with the Gaba, Gaba, Gaba’s. Thank you to the staff of Visiting Angels who provided care and support. At St. Bernards Villa, the staff was supportive, compassionate, and generous with their time. While her time at the Flo & Phil Jones Hospice House at St. Bernards was short, the loving care she received from the staff was a true gift of peace. Katherine’s family extends their heartfelt thanks to all who cared for and loved her.
A private burial service will be held under the direction of Emerson Funeral Home. A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
