Judson Fern

December 5, 1941 — August 2, 2023

On August 2nd, 2023, the world bid farewell to a man who embodied unconditional love and cherished the simpler joys of life. Judson Fern of Jonesboro, AR, passed away suddenly at the age of 81, leaving an irreplaceable void in the lives of those he touched.

Born on December 5th, 1941, in Norwich, NY, to Catherine Rundell and Thomas Fern, Judson was one of ten children. He shared a special bond with his youngest brother, John, now residing in Tampa, FL. Their relationship transcended siblinghood; they were close friends, sharing memories, dreams, and life's milestones. Judson's life was marked by service to both his family and his country. He wore the United States Air Force uniform for 23 dedicated years as a fireman, including deployments during the Vietnam War. His dedication to his country was sincere, undeniable, and a source of immense pride.

However, his most significant chapter was his enduring union with his wife, Barbara Fern. Their 61-year marriage was filled with shared dreams, hope, and an unbreakable love for their children. Together, they built a warm and affectionate home for their four children - Shari Cornelison, Tamara Tilley, the late Steven Fern, and Kevin Fern. Judson’s memory is further cherished by Steven's family - his daughter-in-law, Candace Fern, and granddaughter, Ashley Fern. He also leaves behind ten grandchildren - Kassandra, Daniel, Ashley, Benjamin, Jacob, Victoria, Joshua, Isiah, Nizhoni, Elizabeth - and four great-grandchildren - Addison, Emberly, Adina, and Wren. Each one held a unique place in his heart, their joys his joys, their dreams his dreams. Judson's simple pleasures included the tranquility of fishing, the serenity of camping under the stars, and the shared silence of early morning coffee. But his greatest joy was spending time with his family. He was not a saint, but a man who loved deeply, stood strong in his beliefs, and devoted his life to his family and country. He weathered life's trials with grace and kindness, always ready to lend a hand to those in need. As we mourn his sudden departure, we also celebrate a life well-lived. His legacy, from his corny jokes to his homemade bread, and the unforgettable jams and jellies, will live on in the hearts of those he loved. His memory will forever remind us of the strength of the human spirit, the depth of paternal love, and the nobility of a life dedicated to service.

A celebration of life with military honors will be held at 3:00 pm on Friday, August 11th, 2023, at the South Ridge Volunteer Fire Department, 2358 - AR 163 in Jonesboro. Snacks and refreshments are encouraged but not required. Rest in peace, Judson Fern. May your journey forward be as enriching and adventurous as the life you lived. Your family loves you, misses you terribly, and is profoundly sorry to see you go. Your memory remains a living reminder to those left behind, who are grateful for the time they had with you. Rest in peace, Gramps, we love you.
