John Thomas Young

January 25, 1947 — August 15, 2017

John “Pete” Thomas Young, 70, of Jonesboro passed from this life Tuesday, August 15, 2017 at the Flo and Phil Jones Hospice House surrounded by family. He was born January 25, 1947 in Marked Tree, AR to the late Willie and Lucille Young. After graduating from Nettleton High School in 1965, he served in U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. John went on to receive his BA from Arkansas State University. John retired from DuPont and then continued to work for Denso Manufacturing of Arkansas, before retiring in 2013. John was a long time resident of Jonesboro and a member of Union Grove United Methodist Church. He was also an avid Mopar enthusiast and an active member of the Crowley’s Ridge Cruisers car club here in Jonesboro. John enjoyed traveling to NHRA races and could often be found tinkering with the Mopar in his shop. In addition to working on old cars, he loved spending time with his grandkids, often playing board games, riding four wheelers, turtle hunting, pineapple growing and attending their school events.

John is survived by his wife of 47 years, Linda (Broadaway) Young, of Bono;  two daughters: Sharon Wilkin, and her husband Dirk, of New Sharon, Iowa and Rhonda McElveen, and her husband Adam, of Arlington, Tennessee; four grandchildren: Caitlyn McElveen, Madison McElveen, Thomas Wilkin, and Cole Wilkin; two sisters: Shirley Hogan of Jonesboro and Mary McMunn of Marked Tree as well as many other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his sister Willie Mae Cullins.

A visitation will be from 5 to 7pm Friday, August 18, 2017 at Emerson Funeral Home. A funeral service will be 10:30 am Saturday, August 19, 2017 also at Emerson Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Joe Kaiser officiating. Burial will follow at Union Grove Cemetery with pallbearers being nephews: Lennie Hogan, Delane Hogan, Scott McMunn, Keith Broadaway, Brian Payton, and Matt Hogan.

Memorial donations may be made to the Union Grove Methodist Cemetery.
