John A. Varner, 73, of Lake City passed away Wednesday, July 27, 2022 at NEA Baptist Memorial Hospital. He was born March 31, 1949 in Decatur, Illinois to the late Ham and Ruth Varner. John was a member of Bowman Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the United States Army. John served Craighead County for over 41 years. He work in law enforcement, as a fireman and other reserve roles. In 2019 John retired from the Craighead County Sheriff’s Office. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by a brother, Bill Varner.
Survivors include his brother, Richard (Donna) Varner of Lake City; nephew, Keven (Tanya) Varner of Childress; 2 nieces, Keri Varner of Jonesboro, Kelley Moyer of Lake City; 5 great nephews: Griffin (Lindsey) Varner and Gannen (Brooke) Varner of Childress, Luke (Kendra) Moyer, Logan (Marti) Moyer, and Landon Moyer all of Lake City; great niece, Lexi Moyer of Lake City and 2 great great niece, Everleigh and Hadleigh Moyer of Lake City.
Funeral service will be Sunday, July 31, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. in Emerson Memorial Chapel with Darin Owens officiating. Burial will follow at Lake City Cemetery with police honors. Active pallbearers will be Keven Varner, Griffin Varner, Gannen Varner, Luke Moyer, Logan Moyer, Landon Moyer, Kevin Moyer and Phillip Vanwinkle.
Honorary pallbearers are the Craighead County Sheriff’s Office, Lake City Fire Department and any law enforcement officer.
Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 p.m. prior to the service.
