Commander John Anderson Holmes of Walnut Hill, FL departed this life on October 2, 2010, at the age of 81, in Pensacola, Florida.
He was preceded in death by his wife Marion Tushaus Holmes, of Davenport, Iowa, his parents George W. Holmes and Velma Foreman Holmes, a brother Olan Holmes of Jonesboro, a sister Lois Holmes Wood of Paragould, AR, and a life companion and friend Peggy Johnson of Walnut Hill, FL.
He is survived by his wife Rosemary Jernigan Holmes of the home. Two sons Jerry Holmes and wife Tammy of Doerun, GA and Jim Holmes and wife Susan of Encinitas, CA. Four grandchildren John Christopher Holmes, Julie Ann Holmes Lane, J.D. Holmes, and Kelsey Holmes. One brother Verlyn “Bud” Holmes of Jonesboro, AR and many other relatives and friends.
Mr. Holmes was born May 21, 1929 in Lawrence County, Alabama and moved to Jonesboro with his family around 1931. He entered the Navy Reserve in 1947 and graduated from Nettleton High School in 1948, then entered active duty with the United States Navy. He served through the Korean and Vietnam Wars as an Ariel Reconnaissance Photographer. He was the Commanding Officer of the Combat Camera Group Pacific in Coronada, CA and retired as the Commander of the Navy Photo Training Center at the Pensacola Naval Air Station. After his thirty years service to his country he became a film maker for Civil Engineering and taught film making at West Florida.
Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 Wednesday at Emerson Funeral Home. He will be laid to eternal rest at Nettleton Cemetery Thursday at 2:00 with Rev. Harmon Whitehurst officiating.
