James Robert Sullens, born on September 19, 1943, in Walnut Ridge, lived a life grounded in faith, service and a deep commitment to learning.
He graduated from Black Rock High School and went on to earn two doctorates - one in Philosophy and another in Ancient Biblical Languages - as well as an honorary doctorate, reflecting his lifelong dedication to study and understanding.
At just 19 years old, James answered his calling to ministry, becoming a Baptist minister. Over the years, he faithfully pastored churches across Kentucky, Arkansas, Illinois, Oklahoma, Alabama and Florida. His ministry impacted countless lives, offering guidance, compassion, and steady leadership to the communities he served. He retired in 2013.
On June 17, 1962, he married his high school sweetheart, Anne Sullens (Dawson). Together, they built a life centered on faith and family.
He is survived by his wife, Anne Sullens; his children, Scarlett Sullens and Tim Sullens; his brother, Pat Sullens; four grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Oswald Sullens and Sue Sullens, and his brothers, Michael Sullens and Daniel Rhea Sullens.
Outside of his ministry, James had a passion for aviation and was a private pilot, finding joy and freedom in the skies. He also maintained a lifelong love of learning, always seeking to grow in knowledge and wisdom.
James Robert Sullens will be remembered for his unwavering faith, his devotion to others, and the lasting impact he made on those who knew him.
His favorite scripture reflects the strength and faith that defined his life: "But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint." Isaiah 40:31
