Jerry R. Phillips

July 6, 1946 — February 18, 2009

Jerry R. Phillips, 62, of Jonesboro, Arkansas passed from this world in his home on February 18, 2009. He was born on July 6, 1946 to Willis and Eva Phillips of Hickory Ridge, Arkansas. He was the beloved husband of Betty Glover Phillips for 42 years. Other than his wife, he is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Angie and Jonathan Hobby of Jonesboro, and daughter and son-in-law, Amelia and Bill Buckner of Mayflower; four grandchildren, Michael Hobby, Sarah Hobby, Emily Buckner, and Anna Buckner; four brothers, Billy Phillips, Roger Phillips, Rick Phillips, Gary Phillips, and one sister, Phyllis Kennon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Willis and Eva Phillips.

His hobbies included spending time with family, playing with his grandchildren, reading various kinds of books and engaging in theological discussions and creative thinking. He will be remembered for his selflessness, generosity, kindness and empathy.

He attended Crowley’s Ridge College, received a BA from Harding University, and earned a MA from Harding Graduate School and an MA from Memphis State University. He was a bi-vocational preacher at the Pennington Church of Christ and had been an adjunct professor at Crowley’s Ridge College. He owned and operated Janitorial and Carpet Service and was an elected former Justice of the Peace.

Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M., Friday, February 20, 2009 at Southwest Church of Christ with Steve Thornton officiating and Emerson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Nephews will serve at pallbearers and a 4:15 committal service will be at Lewis Cemetery in Hickory Ridge. Visitation will be at Southwest Church of Christ from noon until service time.
