Jean Damron Woodsmall, 85, passed away peacefully Sunday, December 17, 2017 at her home at Spring Harbor in Columbus, Georgia. Jean was born July 21, 1932 in Jonesboro, Arkansas, as the oldest daughter of Alvie T. and Jewel Lamberth Damron. She lived her early life in Jonesboro where she graduated with the 1950 class of Jonesboro High School and was Valedictorian of her class.
Jean lived and raised her family in Decatur, Alabama. She retired from Amoco Chemical Company in 1994 after 20 years of service. She was a lifelong member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church.
Jean was a wonderful cook who ruined her children for anything that was not homemade. She loved sewing, growing flowers and bird watching. But, what Jean was most proud of were her “four girls”. She was quick to tell any new acquaintance about her girls. Jean raised them by herself, and while things were not always easy, her independent spirit and incredibly straight moral compass helped to shape her four daughters into the strong women they are today.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her daughters, Teri Gallagher (John), Cindy Jones (Matt), Tammi Woodsmall (Giorgio) and Christie Brasco (Joe); two granddaughters, Sydney Prince and Carson York; her sister Pat Guiltner (Ernest Guiltner); two nephews, Lynn and Greg Cook; one grandnephew, Zachary Cook; and one great grandnephew, Bo Cook.
The family thanks the friends and caregivers at Spring Harbor in Columbus, Georgia who supported Jean with love, peace and dignity in the last years of her life.
The family will host a visitation before the service at Emerson Funeral Home in Jonesboro, Arkansas on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 from 10:00-11:00 a.m. A graveside memorial service will follow at Oaklawn Cemetery at 11:30 a.m. with Rev. Patty Soward officiating. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be given in Jean’s honor to Columbus Hospice in Columbus, Georgia.
