Jane Fietz Stepka, 88, passed away on Thursday, June 27, 2024, in her room at her home away from home, The Green House Cottages at Poplar Grove in Little Rock.
Jane was born on March 2, 1936, in Jonesboro, where she was raised and spent the majority of her life. She attended Jonesboro Public Schools through high school and cheered on the "Hurricanes" as a member of the high school cheer squad. She later attended college at Arkansas State University, where she was a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority.
Jane was a polio survivor. At the age of 10, Jane valiantly fought off polio and slowly regained her strength and mobility. She often relayed to her family that she would not have survived if not for the massages given to her by her dear friend Miss Elizabeth. Jane credited Elizabeth with giving her the ability to physically function for the remainder of her life.
Jane was a homemaker for most of her adult life. For several years, she worked as an interior designer through Fowler’s Furniture. She frequently assisted friends with designing their homes. She was especially busy with this work after the Jonesboro tornado of 1973, during which many in the community suffered damage or complete loss of their homes. She worked tirelessly to help those in need.
Jane was a woman of deep faith. She became a devout Catholic after marriage, holding Bible studies, prayer groups, and gatherings with various people to lead them closer to Christ.
Jane is preceded in death by her parents, Marcus and Lorraine Fietz; her brother, Marco Fietz; her husband, Victor Stepka Jr.; and her son, Steve Stepka. Jane is survived by her daughter, Cindi Walker, and her husband, Doug; her son, Andy Stepka, and his wife, Lee Ellen; daughter-in-law, Kim Stepka; as well as four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
There will be a graveside service at Holy Cross Cemetery in Jonesboro on Monday, July 1, at 10:00 a.m. for family and friends.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Blessed Sacrament Church or a charity of the donor’s choice in Jane’s memory.
