James Thomas Hunter

November 13, 1947 — September 25, 2023

Retired SGM James T. Hunter, 75, passed away on Monday, September 25, 2023 at St. Bernards Medical Center. He was born in Elizabeth City, NC to Clarence and Hazel Harris Hunter.

At a young age, he was raised at the Oxford Orphanage in Oxford, NC. James graduated from John Nichols High School and then received an associate degree from Chowan College in NC. After moving to Jonesboro, James continued his education at Arkansas State University, receiving a BSE and MSE.

James was a teacher at the Vocational Technical School in Jonesboro. He was a U.S. Marine, who proudly served in Vietnam. He later returned to service with the Army National Guard Title 10 for a total of 30 years of service to his country.

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. In his later years, James enjoyed volunteering and doing community services in the Jonesboro area.

James is survived by his wife, Robin Clark Hunter; son, William James Hunter; daughter, Maggie Barnes and husband, Garrett; and grandchildren, Tate and Harvey Barnes, all of Jonesboro. He is also survived by his brother, Preston Hunter of Paragould; sisters, Mary Rose Copeland of Winsor, NC, and Frances Bearden and husband, Johnie, of Salisbury, NC.

He is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Winford and Wilford Hunter.

Preston Hunter, Stan McPike, Derek McPike, Adam McPike, John McPike, Garrett Barnes, and Clint Cox will serve as pallbearers.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 28, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at Emerson Memorial Chapel with Stan McPike officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00 – 10:00 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow the funeral service at Oaklawn Cemetery.
