James Russell Dorton

James William Russell (J.R.) Dorton, 97, of Jonesboro, passed away on Wednesday, August 5, 2020, at his home surrounded by his family.

J.R. was a native and life-long resident of Jonesboro. He was a retired farmer and carpenter and enjoyed building various items for his family and friends including furniture. J.R. enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, woodworking, yard work, blacksmithing and spending time with his family.  He was preceded in death by his first wife, Grace Dorton, his second wife, Evie Lee Dorton, and 6 siblings: Vera, Dorothy, Howard, Zelma, Orma Jo and Monroe.

Survivors include 2 sons and daughters-in-law: James and Mary Dorton, and Steve and Patty Dorton, all of Jonesboro;

1 daughter, Denise Heath of Jonesboro;

1 step daughter, Tonya Hatley of Harrisburg;

1 brother and sister-in-law: Doyle and Carolyn Dorton of Jonesboro;

1 sister, Betty Watkins of Jonesboro;

10 grandchildren: Jamie, Jody, Jackie, Stephanie, Jennifer, Russell, Angel, Cynthia, Teressa and Christy; and

19 great grandchildren.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Pine Hill Cemetery with Emerson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Sons and grandsons will serve as pallbearers. A private visitation will be held for the family at the funeral home.
