Iva L. Shaw, 95, of Jonesboro, died June 14, 2011 at Skill Care Nursing Center. Iva was born in Ashland, Nebraska and attended Peru State Teachers College. She taught all elementary grades through the 8th grade in a one room schoolhouse in Ashland, Nebraska. She joined the U.S. Navy WAVES and met her husband, Harold Edgar Shaw, while they were both stationed in Philadelphia.
Iva was an avid reader and loved working crossword puzzles. One of her favorite things to do was to travel with her 2 sisters. She had lived in Jonesboro since 1959 and was well known in her neighborhood for her popcorn balls given out at Halloween. She welcomed family and friends into her home as often as possible and was also well known for her Christmas baking of cakes, breads, and cinnamon rolls. She was a very active member of the Highland Drive Christian Church where she will be sorely missed.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Ivan & Coleen Shaw of Virginia Beach, Virginia; her grandchildren, Jason Shaw, Sarah Youngblood, and Brittney Shaw; and 2 great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Edgar Shaw; her son, Lloyal Shaw; her parents, Ivan & Daisy Dean Armstrong; and her sisters, Unadean Defreece and Leslie James.
Funeral services, with Naval Honors, will be Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Highland Drive Christian Church with Pastor Debra Matthews officiating. Emerson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. until time of service Saturday at the church. Burial will be private.
