Ira Alton Elrod

Ira Alton Elrod, 83, of Bono, died Tuesday, September 23, 2014, at St. Bernards Medical Center in Jonesboro.

Born in Bono, Ira lived most of his life in the Bono-Jonesboro area. He was a 1949 graduate of Bono High School and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. Ira worked 34 years at General Electric in Jonesboro and was a life member of local union 747 of I.U.E. Ira was a long-time member of Unity Baptist Church.

Ira enjoyed fishing and working with his cows, horses and other livestock. He also enjoyed hunting, particularly squirrel and quail, and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan. Ira was preceded in death by his parents: Claude and Lorena Butler Elrod, by a brother, Chester Elrod and by a sister, Winnie Hargrave.

Survivors include his wife, Eura Lee Elrod of the home;

2 sons: Gaylon Elrod of Crossett, and Derrick (Winona) Elrod of Jonesboro;

1 brother, Jack Elrod of Joneboro;

2 sisters: Alice (J.C.) Hicks of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Dorothy Standefer of Jonesboro;

4 grandchildren: Laura (Troy) Imus of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Caleb Elrod of Crossett, Cheyenne Elrod of Fayetteville, and Amanda Elrod of Jonesboro; and

2 great grandchildren: Taylor Imus and Madison Imus.

Visitation will be held Friday from 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. at Emerson Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Unity Baptist Church with Pastor Danny Elrod officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Philadelphia Cemetery.

Active pallbearers include: Gene Hargrave, Jeremy Hargrave, David Elrod, Hunter Elrod, Dillon Elrod and Bill Elrod. Honorary pallbearers include: Curtis Berry, Jr., Roger Watkins and Bill Puckett.
